Title: What is a Project Manager - Really?

How often do you hear people refer to themselves as “project managers” or that they are doing “project management” types of work? Do you ever wonder if they are really talking about the same types of activities, levels of responsibility, scope and complexity of work? Very likely they are not. The term “project management” has increased in use significantly over the past few years. This has been evidenced by the Mayo Clinic Human Resources team who has seen this term come through in an ever increasing number of job descriptions.

So what is a “Project Manager” – Really? What are the various types of project managers, how do their core activities differ, what are the various levels of projects they manage, and what are the skills and experiences required to do project management at each of these levels?

This session will share much of what we have learned to-date on this topic within our organization and where we see this evolving in the future. We look forward to the participation of project managers of all types, skills, and levels to learn more about this broad discipline and your ever changing role within it.

About Terri Knudson

Teresa (Terri) Knudson is the Director of the Enterprise Portfolio Management Office (EPMO) at Mayo Clinic. This office was formed in Spring 2008 to address the need for coordinated, structured, and standardized processes to manage the over $2 Billion investment that Mayo Clinic has in their project portfolio.

Prior to this appointment, Terri worked in various departments throughout Mayo including Finance, Information Technology, Internal Audit Services, Patient Financial Services, and Operations Administration. During these assignments she also held the role of project manager for some of the largest system projects conducted at Mayo including Registration and Billing, Electronic Medical Record, and an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation. Terri joined Mayo Clinic in November 1984.

Prior to Mayo Clinic, she held positions at Deloitte and Cenex. Terri has a diverse educational background with Bachelors Degrees in Accounting and Computer Science, a Masters of Business Administration, is a Certified Public Accountant, and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
