“Planning and Estimating – Are We There Yet?”

We all know the criticality of good planning and estimating on a project. The PMBOK provides us with 21 processes to carry out project planning; more processes than any other Process Group. Planning is the period of time in a project where the Project Manager will need to expend the most effort. Is it possible, however, to do too much planning? How much is too much? How do we know if we are there yet?

In the fast paced world of agile development, the question I hear most often from Project Managers at Mayo Clinic and in the classrooms is: “What is the minimum required for good project planning?”

This session will take a look at what we have learned about the different types of projects and how planning and estimating relates to each type. Whether the project is large or small, complex or simple, process improvement or product development, we are continually learning what is and is not working for each. We look forward to sharing our experiences and best practices in project planning and estimating and also hearing about yours.
