Case Study on a Cultural Challenge: Managing a Volunteer Project to Assist Schools in Uganda

"An opportunity to visit a primary school in Uganda led to a program in which a small volunteer group worked to help improve the classroom environment for teachers and students. A variety of projects have been completed and more are planned. Along the way, we have learned something of the difficulties of making progress when the parties involved are volunteers, have dramatically different cultural backgrounds and do not share the same views about time or economics.

My hope is that this discussion of the Ugandan school projects will provide you with some insights into the impact of cultural issues on executing projects and achieving goals. While you might not encounter the specific issues we have, our experiences might help you better assess and understand the impact of cultural differences in projects so affected."
